The following photos were taken while the Galveston
Island was heading out of Apra Harbor for the wreath laying ceremony on
Sunday, May 25, 200. The ceremony commemorated the memories of men and women
of the Merchant Marines
who lost their lives in conflicts supporting America's Armed Forces. May 22, 2003 was
proclaimed National Maritime Day by President George W. Bush and a
proclamation of the 70th anniversary of the day was also provided and signed by Governor Felix P. Camacho.
Looking Towards Nimitz Towers
Nimitz Hill & Towers as seen from the Cutter as it pulls away towards the mouth of the Harbor. Nimitz Hill appears ready to wrap the cable layer sitting in Apra Harbor. This is a harbor view of Big Navy. Figheter Jets sit ready on board the Air Craft Carrier Vincent. The Cutter heads out towards the mouth of Apra Harbor. This is an approach shot of Orote Point. The Glass Breakwater sits to the north of the Harbor's entrance. I don't know about you, but it's amazing to me that 6,000 individuals can live on board any carrier. It's a small stretch of white sand but just enough to be inviting. This shot reveals a break in the point that leads out to the Philippine Sea. The characteristics of Orote Point are so different it appears this shot is somewhere else. This is a view of Orote Point at the mouth of the Harbor.
