Diana
Slater is the new 2003 Miss Aloha Muscle Classic, a
title she won on September 27, in Maui, Hawaii at the
2003 International Natural Bodybuilding Association
event.
Diana is a
dedicated athlete to the sport of bodybuilding, but only
second to her love for baking; in both cases, the woman
is committed to doing it naturally. "Diana is the
goddess of the hunt," and because her
given name is the same, Diana Slater chose to
personalized her license plate: Huntress. It is a
fitting description of Diana's personality - seeking
perfection through sacrifice and determination to carve
out a body naturally that will win at
competitions.
This is a
story of a Chamorro women who was born and raised on
Guam under the loving and protective care of Maria and
Elmer Calvo of Mongmong, two very traditional Chamorro
parents who at first may have thought differently of
their youngest child's interest in displaying her body -
albeit perfect by anyone's standard - before thousands
of gazing strangers during competition. Lovingly, they
remained silent until one day at a competition her on
Guam, Diana's husband Roger asked his father-in-law,
"Well Dad, what do you think?" Wondering what the old
man thought of his daughter prancing around the stage
half naked, would say; the response was anything but
what Roger expected.
A sneaky little
smile came over the elder Calvo's face as he proudly
replied, "I think she won!" And, he was right. Slater
and Calvo were walking out of the Hyatt Ballroom after
the prejudging for the 2002 Guam National Bodybuilding
Competition. Later that evening Calvo watched as his
daughter walked away with the following titles: 1st
Lightweight Division, Overall Women's Champion and Miss
Guam 2002.
Diana is
the youngest of ten children who struggled with weight
problems as a child and early teen. As a result, as a
young adult Diana developed a determination to stay fit
and jogged regularly along Marine Drive in an effort to
stay in shape. But being fit was not an easy goal to
achieve especially because Diana lacked knowledge and
understanding of nutritional facts despite her
commitment to workout.
Getting
into shape brought Diana to extremes where her diet is
concerned. A story she likes to tell is of falling
victim to the myth that eating fruit - lots of it - will
guarantee weight loss. Reality defeats the myth's edict
of losing weight. When she was eating fruit almost
exclusively, Diana was emaciated looking from her waist
up, bones on her chest and upper back stuck out, but she
could not get rid of her large hips.
All that
has changed as the photos on the right reveal in part
due to an exercise routine that doesn't quit and a high
protein diet; eating habits that only a
stick-to-itiveness vow can produce.
Diana's
hunt for the right education to bring about the success
she enjoys today was not an easy road to travel and only
one who is fat understands what being fat can do
to one's self-esteem. And, that understanding helps one
to appreciate why Diana gets up at 4 am and eats rinsed
canned tuna or a baked sweet potato; call that a meal
and still have a sense of humor after it. Of course as
Roger readily admits, along the way Diana discovered the
thrill of competition. "She really enjoys what she's
doing," he said.
Diana
Slater is a natural champ. She is pleasing to the eye
and delights bodybuilding enthusiasts the world over
with her form. But at the end of the day, as Roger
stated in the interview, the Huntress is
sacrificing for no one but her sheer
pleasure. |
