Guam National Olympic Committee President Rick Blas addresses Team Guam at the UOG Fieldhouse on Sunday during orientation, as Secretary General and Head of Delegation, Bob Steffy (sitting on Blas' left) looks on.

Many of the athletes heading to Suva Fiji to compete in the South Pacific Games have made many sacrifices, achieved personal struggles and altered circumstances to prepare themselves for competition. Now as the day draws near, Team Guam is ready to meet the challenges they've honed their god-given talents and skills for all these years: Win MEDALS - plenty of them, and come home victorious. In addition, make wonderful memories and friends along the way.

The delegation that makes up Team Guam began departing for Suva, Fiji early yesterday morning while other members of the delegation will continue to head out for the South Pacific Games (SPG) throughout the week. Athletes and officials are taking different routes to ultimately get to the same place, the SPG. Its not clear what determines who will take what route, but one thing is certain - they are not on a chartered flight.

The orientation was an opportunity to bring the team together once before heading out to the games to address concerns regarding accommodations in Fiji, proximity to shopping centers and grocery stores, telephone and Internet availability, ticketing and payment issues, proper travel and accreditation documents, security and medical matters and other travel concerns. Blas guarded the athletes not to leave their personal effects, including clothes lying around otherwise they will lose it.

At the games Blas said, "Anything that has Guam on it will be taken as a souvenir, so don't leave your things unattended." Blas cautioned the athletes to be aware of the fact that they are going to be amongst people of different areas, and to conduct themselves more aware of their environment.

Some athletes were concerned about bringing canned tuna with them, it's availability at the games and other food stuff. Others asked about media coverage and the availability of dress uniform for the parade on Opening Day. Team warm-ups was handed out at the orientation and a temporary Guam tattoo was announced for sale for $1.00.

Donna Ysrael-Baker (L) holds up the tattoo while her husband, Jude sports one on his left forearm.

The Rugby Team got up towards the end of the meeting to demonstrate a chant they have been working on which they will perform for motivational purposes at the Athlete Village.

The cost of sending Team Guam to Fiji is not a small task and combined efforts raised more than $400K half of which was collected by selling raffle tickets.
